Based in Kyoto, composer Marihiko Hara has built his unique sound world while also serving as music director for productions such as
the National Dance Company of Korea’s Jungle and director Lee Sang-il’s film National Treasure.
In July 2024, together with Miru Shinoda of yahyel, he launched the sound documentary project THEY ARE HERE.
The project uses recordings—voices and everyday sounds—sent by people living in the Gaza Strip, Palestine,
with whom Hara has been personally in contact since 2024.
Rather than a simple act of donation, THEY ARE HERE introduces the idea of paying sound provision fees,
acknowledging participants as collaborators in the creative process.
This marks the first presentation of THEY ARE HERE in Seoul,
expanding beyond sound to include photographs, messages, and scents from Gaza,
along with a spatial installation by Masaki Sugaya of Ahare space project.
During the exhibition, TELLERS 9.5 (19F, Hotel Anteroom Seoul) will also present
Recipes for Resistance by Megumi Shishikura / Alia,
a collection of recipes from residents of the Gaza Strip,
and Palestine: Travel Sketchbook by Yuka Hashimoto,
based on her 2019 visit to the West Bank.
*All proceeds from music sales and a portion of book sales will be donated.
